On Turning A Year Older

July 23rd, 2007 by angmagwayen

During the days leading to my birthday, lagi akong nalulungkot.

I’m now ready for the rest of my life.

Kapusong Totoo

I love movies. I am a TV addict. So it’s only understandable that I am crazy about the stars.

I was never a big fan of GMA prior to the writing workshop that they offerred for free. At first, I was just thankful dahil binigyan nila ako ng break. Inevitably, however, natutunan kong mahalin ang Syete at tinanggap ko nang malugod ang transformation ko into a tue-blooded Kapuso.

Last week ay naanyayahan kaming maging bahagi ng story conference para sa bagong show na magbubukas sa September. Napakalaki ng proyektong ito. All star cast pa! Sobrang nakaka-overwhelm na sa harap ng mga iniidolo kong artista ay in-acknowledge ako ng Headwriter namin na si Don Michael Perez as part of the writing team. Wow! There’s no other show I want so much to be part of except this one. Kasama kasi ako mula nung mag-umpisang buuin ang kwento nito. I am so excited about it kaya ngayon pa lang ay marami na akong ideas na naiisip for the show.

Sa primetime ito ipapalabas. Pagbibidahan ang show nina Dennis Trillo, Marky Cielo and Aljur Abrenica, na lahat ay present during the story con. Si Dennis nga umakbay pa sa akin for the camera, tapos nakipag-usap pa right after. Hahaha. I doubt naman kung matatandaan niya. Pero, still, it’s overwhelming to receive such niceness from a TV star.

It was a memorable experience attending my first story conference. Ganun pala yun!

Everything’s in ORDER

I wouldn’t be surprised kung maraming mga bata ang magrereklamo na hindi nila naintindihan or hindi maganda ang latest Harry Potter film, ang Order of the Phoenix. Well, their parents who must have read the book should have realized that it was inevitable for the film to be darker than its predecessors. Nevertheless, I would count this movie as one of the better films in the series. Ang ganda ng screenplay ni Michael Goldenberg. Kahit condensed ang maraming bahagi ng book at may ilang minor revisions to suit the film, I don’t think J.K. Rowling and her fans would feel betrayed. But Yates did a very great job.

It was a delight to see characters from the past films converge on this one. Nagbabalik sina Trelawney, Lupin, Sirius and Mad Eye Moody. Syempre, there’s also Mrs Weasley and the Dursleys whom we all missed in the fourth film. At hindi rin dapat mawala si Voldemort, who we first saw ressurected in Goblet of Fire. Pero, aside from Voldemort, isa sa mga kaiinisan mong kontrabida sa Order of the Phoenix ay si Professor Umbridge, portrayed brilliantly by Imelda Staunton.

There’s one scene in the film where Harry had a flashback of himself when he was 11 years old, looking at the Mirror of Erised. It’s simply amazing how much Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have grown up before our eyes through these Harry Potter films. If Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will in fact be the last of the series, that leaves just two more films to be made. I know millions of fans are hoping that the three teen-agers would reprise their roles to the very end.

But it seems na medyo nagkaka-fatigue na sila na laging yun na lang ang role na ginagampanan nila. There’s also the danger of forever being stereotyped as Harry, Hermione and Ron. Kaya nga itong si Daniel Radcliffe ay "nagpakarebelde" last February when he appeared in the play EQUUS as Allan Strang. According to the Daily Mail: For Radcliffe, it was a big mental leap from portraying JK Rowling’s boy wizard to taking on a character in the psychoreligious exploration of equine worship. Radcliffe could have stood on the stage and read the London telephone book and the play still would have sold out. That he took on such an intellectual theatrical challenge was brave - and he succeeded.

Nagpyesta ang mga fans ni Radcliffe when the publicity photos for Equus came out. A sexier and buff seventeen year old like we’ve never seen him before.

HAWLA: Snapshots

These are the other photos taken during and after the staging of Hawla at the Medicine Forum Hall last Saturday. I’d like to say thank you to my friend Real Florido and Vidal Condicion for providing these pictures.

Si Anna Paula Montano bilang si Lorna Herrera, who claims that "sex was that good during those days".

Muling nagbabalik sa entablado ng Magwayen si Len to delight the audience with her charms and funny portrayal of a girl who treats her man with porn.

Ampol gave an equally brilliant performance.

HAWLA: Revisited

July 19th, 2007 by angmagwayen

(originally posted in my blogspot on June 25, 2007)

It was a really busy week.

We had a concert last Monday , kasabay ng Foundation Day ng PLM. It was called MPOP. It’s always scary to perform at the Tanghalang Bayan. But we pulled it off. Superb ang mga dance production numbers. May surprise guest appearance pa ni Aicelle Santos.

After the concert, wala pa ring pahinga. Rehearsals naman kami for the play Hawla. Wala nang time for overnight kaya nagkasya na kami sa ilang oras na practice sa school. I had to be there, kasi, for the first time in nine years, kasali ako sa cast ng play. I’m Dick in the story, isang horny yet sex-deprived boyfriend. Hahaha!

Friday morning, ang call time was 8:00 AM. I was earliest na dumating. It seems that some bad habits are not easily shaken off, kahit pa siyam na taon na ang grupo.

Then, we had a problem sa venue. We had to move the play to the Audio Visual Room.

So we had to stall some more.

Around 2:30 PM, we finally lifted the curtains (well, figuratively). Patok ang opening scene. Hilarious ang mga comical na eksena. Ang lakas ng tawanan ng mga tao. Bentang benta ang tandem nina Ampol at Shiela. And then, sumunod na ang mga monologues.

Unang-una si Bombing, to think na siya ang kahuli-hulihang actor to join the cast. I had initial doubts that he could deliver the depth of his role. He wasn’t the first choice for the part. Pero destined yata si Marvin to play the role of Eric. Maraming nadala sa acting niya. I can’t imagine the play with a different Eric.

I came up with an adlib na ‘di ko inakalang magiging patok na punchline.

Joseph came in next. Ang bagito ng Magwayen. He had the longest monologue. Demanding din yung role. Aminado naman si Joseph na nahirapan siya. Pero na-capture din niya ang audience with his tale of the prodigal son addicted to drugs.

Excited ako sa eksena nina Ampol and Alyssa. Intense kasi yung spot nila. As usual, very reliable yung performance ni Alyssa. Ampol was delightful to watch as he combined good comedic timing with drama.

Finally, Real wrapped up the play with his monologue. He has a charismatic presence on stage. He remains skeptic about how good he is, but he did a good job as JR.

Lee, Marvine at Sheena.

Overall, Borgy did a great job directing the play. But part of the credit should also go to the Elders who assumed directorial responsibilities during the rehearsals that he missed, lalung-lalo na si Mike.

HOMECOMING

(Originally posted in my Blogspot on June 26, 2007)

Dahil na-involve ako sa preparations ng dalawang malaking proyekto ng Magwayen sa pagbubukas ng schoolyear na ito, I got the chance to re-visit my Alma Mater - ang Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Kung susumahin, I’ve been in and out of this University sa nakalipas na 13 taon: 5 years bilang estudyante, 4 years bilang empleyado, at 4 years bilang karaniwang alumni.

I was enchanted by its beauty.

I have many fond memories of PLM. Marami akong namimiss. Maraming beses akong umibig at nabigo.

I never took the time to stare at the buildings, at the field, at everything. I never thought I’d be mesmerized.

Haaay… Tumatanda na nga ako.

Purgatoryo

April 25th, 2007 by angmagwayen

Final_taty_website EPISODE 6

Vikhoune held Adam’s hand as they walked out of the room. Adam is seeing the surroundings for the first time. He realized that Vikhoune had taken him in a bunker. There were people all over the place, dressed in weird forms of clothing. Adam now knows that they are not part of a parade. They are dead men and women from various periods of time.

Vikhoune led him to several hallways and flights of stairs until they reached a glass door. No, wait. It ain’t glass at all. It’s made of thick ice.

"Where are you taking me?" asked Adam. Vikhoune did not respond. She pressed her hand on the door, which suddenly went ablaze. Adam removed his hand from Vikhoune’s grasp and stepped back, feeling a mix of shock and amazement.

"Do not be afraid, Adam," Vikhoune said softly.

Maybe it was the reassuring tone of her voice. Maybe it was the way she looked at him. Maybe it was the calmness in the way she moves. Whatever the reason, Adam knew it was safe to follow her, even as she entered the blazing door. She vanished, swallowed up by the flames.

Adam stood there for a moment. He doesn’t know what awaits him on the other side. But he knew he had to take that step. He closed his eyes tightly and balled his hands into fists. He held his breath and plunged into the fiery gate.

Purgatoryo

April 19th, 2007 by angmagwayen

180pxmagwayen_1 EPISODE 5

Adam thought of all the stories he have heard and read about the purgatory. He never actually believed it existed, although he found it amusing, both as an ingredient in many fictional works and as a facet of catholic belief. It was often defined as a place where those who have died expiate their sins by suffering to receive the grace of God.

The discovery that he was at the purgatory came as no surprise for Adam. He didn’t consider himself a good man when he was still alive. He had three girlfriends aside from Marie. His success at work came at the expense of many friends who deserved the promotions more. He only goes to Church on Christmas Eve, and sometimes on his birthday. He was always thinking of himself.

But he wasn’t all bad, though. He loved his brothers so much and would do everything for them. He never drank a bottle of beer or smoked a cigarette in his lifetime. There were times when he would find himself compassionate and sensitive, that even he himself was surprised. And despite the gross absence from Church on Sundays, he believed in a God.

“What I saw… Is that how I died?” Adam asked.

“You cannot deny death when you see it,” Vikhoune answered, repeating what she said earlier. Her voice is shrill and almost haunting. “The purgatory perpetually taunts you by evoking the moment of your death when you look into your own eyes. The same happens when you look into others’ eyes. You see their death, as you have seen mine.”

The visions he had at the park when he first met Vikhoune came back to Adam’s head. He saw her commit suicide by slashing her throat with a broken piece of mirror. He cringed at the violence of these images. He wondered if it was possible that this quiet, innocent-looking girl was really capable of such ferocity.

          “What happens now?” Adam asked.

For the first time, the monotony in the girl’s facial expression was broken. She raised an eyebrow. It seemed she did not understand the question posed by Adam. She sat at the edge of the bed and looked down. “There is nothing,” she replied quietly. “We are here to linger, to suffer and be given no respite. We relive our death, see our past recur endlessly, inundating us in our regrets, guilt, and remorse. There is nothing here, nothing more, but death.”

Adam shook his head. “That’s not what this place is! There is heaven, or hell for that matter. We are here to do penance, if we choose so. Purgatory is not a final dwelling!”

The girl stood with a bolt. Her face displayed anger this time. “You know not what you speak of! Beware! Continue this barrage, and death shall certainly come your way once more!”

Adam was intrigued by her ominous tone. “What do you mean?”

“The black cloak shall come and get you, and he shall perish you. I saved you once. But next time, there may be more of them.” Vikhoune stepped closer to him and whispered to his ear. “Do your chores! Come with me, where you shall be safe. But only if you stop blaspheming this place.”

“What chores?” Adam wanted to know. “And I’m in danger? I’m already dead!”

“This place is a sanctuary," replied Vikhoune. "And it will remain as such for you if you shut your mouth. Now, come with me!”

Purgatoryo: Behind the Scenes Look

April 19th, 2007 by angmagwayen

3.     Isa sa mga inspirasyon ng kwento ay ang pelikulang Matrix, hence the dark undertones of the story.

5.     Ang Purgatoryo ay isang work in process. Patuloy na isinusulat, wala pang ending.

Counting The Days ‘Til Magwayen Turns 10

April 19th, 2007 by angmagwayen

180pxmagwayen

By 28th August next year, Magwayen will celebrate its 10th Anniversary. The Magwayen alumni, fondly referred to as its Elders, have great plans for this momentous event. Although none of them are in writing yet, hehehe. But there have been talks about a dinner concert at a Hotel, a commemorative coffeetable book, the launching of the Magwayen ID, and a lot more. Everybody’s excited already. But busy and conflicting schedules, financial resources, and other logistical concerns stand in the way. Well, we’re all hoping for the best. Wow! Isang dekada na ang Magwayen! It’s simply amazing.
